Yes, but probably no greater than the chance of anyone else getting it. One in three of us will get cancer at some point in our lives and bowel cancer is quite common. If your gran was diagnosed at quite an old age there is unlikley to be a genetic component and so your risk wouldn’t be higher than the norm.
You can reduce your risk of bowel cancer by eating a high fibre diet and not smoking.
Everyone is at risk for getting it. There is a 5% chance of it sometime in our lifetime and most who do are over 65. It is rare for it to be hereditary, of those that are they usually get it before they are 55. If the doctor thought your grandmother’s is hereditary he or she would have her tested. Having multiple first and second degree relatives with colon cancer does increase your risk for getting it, but it doesn’t mean you will and it is only one of several risk factors. You’re too young to be concerned about it now. The best defense is to start getting colonoscopies when you are 50 years old.
