what are post op complications of Bowel Cancer Surgery?
My 70 year old father had surgery for bowel cancer 2 weeks ago, he is still in hospital, still feels very ill and still has no control over his bowels, it took 3 days for his bowel to start working properly and now he has no idea when he is going to the toilet, he is going around 7 times in 24 hours. is this normal, how long if ever will he be back to normal……….

It may take a while to retrain the muscles that help keep him continent. He has had major surgery so this might be a way down the road. It also depends on the part of the bowel that they removed. The large bowel is responsible for removing water from the stool so if he had a large part of that removed he wouldn’t be reabsorbing as much water so his stool would be looser.
Ultimately, his nurse or doctor can give you the best answer as they know the particulars of his case. Every patient is different, and we can only give you our best educated guess.
As for going a lot, his nurses will keep an eye on how often he is going and what kind of stools he is having and monitor if it is a problem. At this point we are far more concerned if he stops pooping.
My thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
My husband had non Hodgkins Lymphoma and is a 6 year survivor. He had the same problem for quite a while after and had to use Depends. My husband is 79 and just got his release from Oncology. He is now back to normal so there is hope. I know the 2 incidences are not the same but the results are. Your Dad needs to be patient and I know from experience that it is not easy.
Typically patients leave the hospital in 4-5 days. There can be several postop complications, but you need to ask his doctor what your father’s are.
