Over 11 million Americans suffer from hemorrhoids today, and over 250 million people the worldwide. They are suffering from extreme pain in the anal rectal area and often wonder What can possibly hurt this much. Hemorrhoids are the answer.
Hemorrhoids and Piles are medically defined as: “areas of inflamed tissue in and around the anal region.” Hemorrhoids can also be caused by swollen or varicose veins in the bodies anal canal. Swollen veins inside the canal are known as internal hemorrhoids, as opposed to the external ones, and some unfortunate people have both forms simultaneously.
Both of these forms of hemorrhoids can be extremely painful, but most are not considered serious as long as the individuals get adequate treatment for them and their symptoms. It is important to know this because most are unaware what hemorrhoids are until they begin to appear.
Normally sufferers only begin to find out about hemorrhoids and piles when they start to cause them pain. Sufferers of hemorrhoids can have them for years and they can intensify over time if they are not handled properly. They will affect at least 90% of the population at least once. Because of this, it’s important to know how to limit their effects and hopefully prevent hemorrhoids from becoming excessively swollen and painful.
Hemorrhoid Symptoms
Rectal bleeding during bowel movements is a common symptom for internal and external hemorrhoids. If they are internal, then blood will be visible in the stool or in the water. If they are external, it is likely that there will be visible blood in the stool and also on the toilet paper.
Another common symptom of hemorrhoids is rectal itching, as is also rectal pain (especially after using the bathroom).
The most widespread form of hemorrhoids are external ones. They will occur in the opening to the anus. They are skin-covered veins that will become red after being inflamed. You should be careful with these as they are extremely sensitive to touch and can begin to itch and give a burning sensation as they become more intense.
Hemorrhoid Causes
The precise cause of hemorrhoids and piles is still unknown. Many doctors believe that hemorrhoids are primarily caused from a lack of fiber in the diet. This can be helped by adding fiber to your diet so that stools can be softened, thereby causing lessening strain during bowel movements. One common belief is that sitting in one position for a extended periods of time. It is very likely that there are more reasons why hemorrhoids can become irritated.
What do we know about hemorrhoids? Well we know that they can be extremely painful and extremely irritating to have. One way to help with them is to research and learn about their causes, symptoms, and treatments. This can be of great help and comfort to those suffering from piles and hemorrhoids.

Some facts:
MYTH : Sitting too much at the street sidewalks or on a cold concrete floor causes hemorrhoids.
Say what? Doesn’t matter where you sit. It’s the same. Too much sitting causes extra pressure on the vein walls down below, even if you’re sitting in a soft cushion. Just avoid giving too much pressure there, take a break every now and then if your job/activity involves a lot of sitting. So I would call this busted, but there’s a ring of truth there on the sitting too much part.
Pregnant women can get hemorrhoids during the last 6 months of pregnancy. This is because of increased pressure on the blood vessels in the pelvic area. Straining to push the baby out during labor can make hemorrhoids worse.
If you are embarrassed because of the haemorrhoids to venture out and have a good time because of the symptoms, don’t fret! There are many who are in in the same soup as you. It is recommended that you visit your family doctor immediately.
Most hemorrhoids do not require surgery. It is usually considered only for severe hemorrhoids.
Surgery may be done if other treatments (including home treatment) have failed. Surgery is also considered when symptoms become so bothersome that your lifestyle is affected or when hemorrhoids create a medical emergency, such as uncontrolled bleeding or blood and pus at the anus along with severe rectal pain.
Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. About half of all people have hemorrhoids by age 50. The most common symptom of hemorrhoids inside the anus is bright red blood covering the stool, on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. Symptoms usually go away within a few days.
I’ve had problems with hemroids for way too long. I would just like to say thank you for the hemroid treatment tips; I will be putting them to good use.
Bleeding hemorrhoids are associated with Internal Hemorrhoids and blood does not usually accompany External Hemorrhoids. Though doctors usually associate bloody stools with internal hemorrhoids, there may be other variants or more serious conditions to consider including anal cancer or fissures. If blood is generally noticed only during the passing of a stool or at the end of a bowel movement, it is generally a case of hemorrhoids that are bleeding.
A moist anal area is prone to irritation and infection of the skin. Sprinkle the anus with cornstarch or baby powder to absorb any moisture.
A large cotton fluff, torn from a commercially available “roll of cotton,” should be placed between the buttocks to absorb excessive moisture. A physician should evaluate excessive moisture, especially if it is tinged with blood.
Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure in the veins of your anus or rectum. One of the main causes is straining when you’re trying to have a bowel movement. This may happen if you’re constipated or if you have diarrhea. It may also happen if you sit on the toilet too long. Hemorrhoids can also be caused by obesity, heavy lifting or any other activity that caused you to strain.
Avoid laxatives, except bulk-forming laxatives such as Fiberall, Metamucil, etc. Other types of laxatives can lead to diarrhea, which can worsen hemorrhoids.
Use acetaminophen (one brand name: Tylenol), ibuprofen (one brand name: Motrin) or aspirin to help relieve pain.
Use natural oils from chestnut and aloe to minimize the pain and to increase the regenerations of your veins.
If you are going to sit, sit on a padded chair or put a pillow on a chair. Let your bum rest. Don’t sit on hard chairs like school chairs. Wear cotton underwear so that your bottom half can breath and not get irritated from the heat.
Colon-Rectal Surgeons keep their patients overnight to keep them medicated after surgery. The tissue of the anus is so sensitive that this is a necessity.
External hemorrhoids are located around the anus. They can by itchy and extremely painful, especially if they become thrombosed. If you know how to shrink hemorrhoids, you may be able to keep them from getting thrombosed.
Occasionally internal hemorrhoids are pushed out of the rectum, or prolapsed, when you strain to have a bowel movement. You may be able to gently push it back up inside your rectum, which is the best home treatment of hemorrhoids that have prolapsed.
Hemorrhoids do not discriminate against anyone. Both Men and Women can get hemorrhoids. Women especially are vulnerable to hemorrhoids during pregnancy. There is no evidence that suggests men are more likely to get hemorrhoids then women.
Rubber band ligation. The doctor places a special rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. The band cuts off circulation, causing the hemorrhoid to shrink. This procedure should be performed only by a doctor.
Hemorrhoid isn’t very harmful & there is no any sort of evidence that it can only be seen in men or women only. But if the pain gets severe, we should conceive immediate medication as & for temporary medicines like Aspirin, Ibuprofen which are pain killers could certainly solve the issue for stipulated amount of time.
A visual examination of the anus and surrounding area may be able to diagnose external or prolapsed hemorrhoids. A rectal exam may be performed to detect possible rectal tumors, polyps, an enlarged prostate, or abscesses.
The best way to prevent hemorrhoids is to keep stools soft so they pass easily, thus decreasing pressure and straining, and to empty bowels as soon as possible after the urge occurs. Exercise, including walking, and increased fiber in the diet help reduce constipation and straining by producing stools that are softer and easier to pass.
Internal hemorrhoids are located in the inside lining of the rectum and cannot be felt. They are usually painless and make their presence known by causing bleeding with a bowel movement.
Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure in the veins of your anus or rectum. One of the main causes is straining when you’re trying to have a bowel movement.
The anal veins drain blood away from the anal canal and the hemorrhoids. These veins drain in two directions. The first direction is upwards into the rectum, and the second is downwards beneath the skin surrounding the anus.
If the hemorrhoid originates at the top (rectal side) of the anal canal, it is referred to as an internal hemorrhoid. If it originates at the lower end of the anal canal near the anus, it is referred to as an external hemorrhoid.
One of the alternative name for hemorrhoid is Rectal lump. The causes of the hemorrhoid might be a result from constipation, anal infections, or just sitting for long periods of time. In some instances, hemorrhoid is caused by other diseases such as liver. Thanks for the post. A very interesting article.
The problem with this disease is when it starts; its occurrence usually cannot be noticed. But then slowly it spreads and starts giving a burning sensation. This disease is seen in both men and women. I have even heard that after a specific limit of its spread, the person suffering from it even finds it difficult to sit on the chair. Try wearing skin friendly and good quality clothes. I feel that before it gets worst one should always consult a doctor. Hemorrhoids are not fatal but its pain is unbearable. I have even heard that most of the people get this disease. I pray nobody suffers from it. And hope that even the medical researchers find a good solution for it.
hahaha, rectal lump!? Think we should start using that term instead of hemorrhoids, that is gross/hilarious! lol
No one ever discusses about hemorrhoids when it happens during pregnancy. The case becomes even more complex and difficult for the lady. Here are simple ways to prevent it. For pregnant women, the main culprit behind the formation of hemorrhoids is constipation. Straining while moving your bowels puts even more pressure on the already dilated veins. If you do get constipated, talk to your health team about a stool softener. To avoid constipation in the first place:
Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day.
Eat a high fiber diet (bulk-forming agents such as Metamucil may be help).
Exercise regularly.
For softer stool it is best to have lots of fiber in your diet. Foods rich in fiber include oatmeal, rasins, prunes, papaya and most vegetables. Also drink lots of fluids like water and avoid caffeine.
Thank you for the information. I’m sure someone experiencing the pain of hemmorhoids really appreciates sites out there dedicating this information to them!

Hemorrhoids can be terribly painful for the suffer. Increasing fibre and water intake to improve the quality of the stool is definitely a help. This is a bit alternative, but the squatting position (as used in many Asian countries) can lower the strain on the anus and rectum during defecation. If you’re a hemorrhoid suffer, it’s worth a try to see if it works for you.

Generally, hemorrhoids develop because of swelling of the rectal veins. This swelling causes the vein to bulge against the walls, forming sacs that are generally tiny at first but without proper treatment, will continue to swell and bulge even bigger.
I’ve been suffering of hemorrhoids for almost 10 years. Over time the pain and discomfort have increased. So, to put an end to pain I wend to the doctor and asked for surgery. Since I had blood in my stool and both internal and external hemorrhoids, I was given an unguent called nitroglycerin 0.2% to heal the internal cracks. It cost me less than $5 and it took me almost 4 weeks to feel completely well. Since then I’ve had no blood, nor pain; the internal problem had completely disappeared said the doctor. However, the external hemorrhoids were still very visible and they itch like hell. For that I used EMO-CORT (1%) creme (about $10). It’s been only 1 week since I began the treatment and the piles receded by 50% and the itching is completely gone. This treatment is real, effective, costs almost nothing and it will definitely improve the quality of your life. I don’t need anything from you just pass the word on to end the hemorrhoids suffering and put an end to those false treatments that profit from human misery.
Eating food rich in fibers is a big help. Oats and some vegetables are rich in fibers.
I don’t suffer from hemmorhoids, but I know others who do. Thanks for the helpful tips!
